 Birmingham Airport Runway Extension

(John Doherty M.D with 1200 TBM ready for the 2nd Drive)

Active Tunnelling have been appointed by the principal contractor Morgan Sindall, to construct 600m of Tunnelled drainage as part of the Runway Extension advanced works.

Active’s scope of work consists of 2no 125m 1200dia Pipe Jacks 1no 70m 1200dia Pipe jack’s  and 1no 1500dia 80m Pipe jack.

The majority of this work will be carried out within the existing Long Stay Car park which is still remaining open to the airports customers, so as to provide a safe and secure area to park whilst on their holidays!

Several large reduced digs need to be completed to stay within the Civil Aviation Authorities height limitations so as not to “disturb the critical ground to air ILS radar”. This has meant adopting a strict code of practise to ensure that this will not happen, and one that Active have taken on board (sorry for the pun)!

The pipe jacks are being carried out utilising Active’s own TBM’s in a predominately Mercia mud stone ground condition.

We will update this page at the next milestone of a very complex and important contract.
