Contract: M25 Widening - Junctions 27-30 - Auger Bored Cross Drains

"Active Tunnelling Ltd (ATL) has worked in partnership with Skanska Balfour Beatty Joint Venture (SBBJV) on section 1 of the M25 between junctions 16 & 23 on all 3 phases of the Cross Drain contract.  The works were carried out by Auger bore method with ATL sinking their own 'Drive' and 'Reception' pits and in total laid approximately 2,100m of clay and concrete pipelineunder the main cariageway.  These works are are valued at approximately £3.3m

The Pipelines have varied in diameter between 300mm to 600mm and between 10m to 50m in length per crossing.  ATL has developed a process of  "Blind" Auger boring (access only required from one sideto assist SBBJV during phase 3 that has aided early completion and allowed other contractors improved access to working areas.  500m have been successfully completed in this way while maintaining accuracy and programme.

ATL have performed well on this scheme dealing with some very challenging types of ground, weatherand time constraints working with traffic management.  SBBJV and ATL have forged good relationships that enabled the programme to become fluent so that the changes can be dealt with smoothly and effectively to complete within the overall programme period.

In Summary ATL completed 80 crossings, delivering a quality product with an innovative fresh approach.  The work was carried out in a safe and competent manner, on budget and within programme to make this a very successful contract for both parties.  Good relationships allowed for change to take place at minimal cost and time.  ATL were very proactive in the planning of resources to meet the needs of SBBJV and I would have no issues working with ATL again in the near future or recommending them for future works.

ATL have shown a sensible approach to commercial matters that enabled accounts to be settled quickly and efficiently.  During phase 1z works, this sensible commercial approach enabled the difficult ground conditions encountered to be dealt with in a satisfactory manner both to ATL and SBBJV.  Given the very demanding programme of the M25 widening, this was a crucial outcome for the project.

"We are pleases to provide a reference for the successful completion of our scheme at Alderley Edge.  The scheme consists of 4nr 4m ID segmental Shafts sunk between 16 to 18 m approximately 3.5m away from the West Coast Main Line.  All of our shafts encountered bands of running sand during the construction, with the shafts eventually founded in stiff clay or mudstone.  Shaft 2 was constructed underwater for the final 5m and founded in Mudstone/Siltstone.  Upon completion of the shafts, ATL fixed(approx 22t/shaft) within the shafts, filled them with concrete and installed Macalloy anchorages into the caissons to act as piled foundations for a new bridge construction.  All of the shafts were constructed on time, within strict settlement criteria of Network Rail and to the satisfaction of Birse Rail in a professional and competent manner.  We look forward to working with Active Tunnelling in the future

Contract: Priddys Hard Pumping Station & Crossways Pumping Station

"We are pleased to be able to recommend Active Tunnelling to carry out the construction of segmental shafts. They have completed two contracts for us, both of which have gone extremely well. The most recent contract required the design, supply and installation of a Ø3.66m smoothbore segmental shaft, 6m deep, to form a new pumping station wetwell for Southern Water. The shaft was located adjacent to a sea wall and in a very tight and confined site with limited access and working room. Due to the proximity of the sea, the works were subject to tidal influences and this necessitated forming the 3m deep concrete plug at the base of the shaft underwater. Following the completion of the concrete plug a reinforced concrete base was dowelled into the shaft and concreted, all joints were sealed, benching was installed to the pump manufacturer's requirements and holes core drilled for incoming and outgoing pipes, ducts and vents. Active Tunnelling even supplied and installed a precast concrete cover slab. Active Tunnelling completed the works in a safe and professional manner, finishing ahead of programme and to budget. We would be pleased to recommend them and will not hesitate to work with them again in the future"
